Find the position of the centre of flotation of a ship if the trim remains unchanged after loading the following cargo: 100 tonnes centre of gravity 8 metres forward of amidships 20 tonnes centre of gravity 40 metres aft of amidships 28 tonnes centre of gravity 20 metres aft of amidships

Find the position of the centre of flotation of a ship if the trim remains unchanged after loading the following cargo:

100 tonnes centre of gravity 8 metres forward of amidships

20 tonnes centre of gravity 40 metres aft of amidships

28 tonnes centre of gravity 20 metres aft of amidships

Reference: Ship Stability for Masters & Mates (6th edition), Exercise – 16.15

Solution:

10*(x+8) = 20*(40-x) + 28(20-x)

=> x = 3.78 m

COF is 3.78 m AFT of amidship.
